Rustenburg – Residents are being targeted by scammers impersonating Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM) employees, aiming to steal their hard-earned money. These fraudsters sound convincing, warning of utility disconnections for unpaid bills.

One resident shared, “My wife, a preschool principal in Proteapark, received a call about an overdue water bill. She was told payment was needed to avoid disconnection. She contacted DA councillor Ilse Edwards, who confirmed it was a scam. Other preschools have been targeted too.”

Ilse stated, “Scammers are pretending to be from the municipality, demanding payments via eWallet to prevent utility disconnections. Residents must remain vigilant and report such incidents.”

The Rustenburg Local Municipality warns that these imposters often contact residents via WhatsApp, threatening disconnections unless immediate payment is made. They emphasise that no private payments should be made, urging residents to report any such attempts to the police and the municipality.

For assistance, contact the Rustenburg Local Municipality’s anti-fraud hotline at 0800 811 222 or the customer care call centre at 060 543 6563. Additionally, report incidents to your nearest police station.
