Rustenburg – The community of Rustenburg is reeling from a tragic incident that claimed the life of 40-year-old Moeletsi Moses Sedi, who was fatally mauled by two pit bulls on Saturday 6 April 2024. The attack occurred around 8:00 at his workplace, where he also resided.

Moses Sedi, who had helped raise the dogs since they were puppies, was performing his duties as a gardener and handyman at a company based in Waterval, just outside Rustenburg. “He loved those dogs, and it’s heartbreaking that they turned on him,” said Sello Sedi, Moses’ uncle.

Tragically, Moses never met his 9-month-old son. He was planning a holiday to meet him for the first time. The child’s mother resides at Moses’ family home. Sello expressed his grief starkly: “He died a terrible death – he died like a dog – and it’s unacceptable that neither the police nor his employers informed us of his death. We only learned of his passing days later when a community member noticed his body at the state mortuary, having been attacked by the dogs.”

The Sedi family are calling for accountability. They believe the owner of the dogs should have taken measures to prevent such an incident. Police investigations are underway. “We are conducting an inquest into Mr. Sedi’s death, following the report of the attack,” stated colonel Adéle Myburgh, North West police spokesperson. “The owner of the dogs was not present at the time of the incident. Mr. Sedi was found with visible bite marks and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.”

As the debate on the breeding of pit bulls rages on, one thing remains certain: it is crucial for people to carefully consider both their nature and suitability as pets, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all.
