Rustenburg – The police responded immediately after they were notified about a courier vehicle being robbed on the N4 near the Waterfall Mall on Wednesday 12 May.

A Quantum, Ford Ranger, Iveco and Lexus with an unknown number of suspects which matched the description of the suspects’ getaway vehicles, were soon spotted close to Krugersdorp. SAPS’ Serious and Violent Crimes, Rapid Response Services and other law enforcement agencies were dispatched to Krugersdorp without delay. A high-speed chase ensued when law enforcement caught up with the robbers, followed by a shootout after the suspects opened fire on the cops. 

The multidisciplinary team managed to arrest eight suspects, confiscating three unlicensed rifles, a pistol, four stolen vehicles, and suspected stolen property. Six of the suspects arrested were from the Quantum, one from the Iveco, and one from the Ford Ranger. The Lexus was later found abandoned, with a pistol inside.
 
No injuries from the shootout were reported. The suspects will be charged with armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, attempted murder, the possession of stolen property, and negligent driving. They will be profiled to determine if they are linked to other crimes – especially to that of the robbery of courier vehicles.

Three unlicensed rifles, a pistol, four stolen vehicles, and suspected stolen property were confiscated.
