SA – Before employing a private investigator it is important to check whether they are registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) in terms of Act 56 of 2001.

It is a criminal offense in terms of section 20(1) and section 38(3)(a) of Act 56 of 2001 to portray oneself as a private investigator if not registered and in good standing with the PSiRA. This body also regulates security companies and one can do registration verification at no cost on www.psira.co.za. In addition, the public can anonymously report any imposters through the PSiRA website.
