Derby/ Ventersdorp – Eight people died and five of them burned beyond recognition when a bakkie collided with a minibus between Derby and Ventersdorp on Tuesday night, 10 April.


According to the law enforcement authorities at the scene, both vehicles burst into flames on impact. Seven people were certified dead on the scene. Two were rushed to the nearest hospital where one person succumbed to injuries. 


The bakkie was travelling from Ventersdorp’s direction to Derby with two occupants, while the minibus, carrying seven people including the driver was travelling from Derby towards Ventersdorp. 


North West MEC for community safety and transport management, Dr Mpho Motlhabane has sent his heartfelt condolences to the families and wished a speedy recovery to the surviving passenger.

The cause of the accident is not yet known, however, a case of culpable homicide in being investigated by the police.
