SKY HIGH SAFETY
Rustenburg – Aviation enthusiasts and industry experts gathered at Airspan Executive Airport on Saturday 22 February 2025 for the General Aviation Safety Strategy event, hosted by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). The event aimed to enhance safety in non-commercial aviation, addressing preventable accidents and fostering a proactive safety culture.
“Three elements define aviation safety: personnel, aircraft maintenance, and flight operations,” explained Neil de Lange, senior manager of General Aviation at SACAA. General aviation, which includes private and leisure flying, accounts for most aviation incidents. To address this, SACAA engages in safety outreach through initiatives like Skywatch and workshops tailored to regional challenges.
Accidents vary from minor incidents, like landing mishaps, to more serious cases. SACAA provides a confidential reporting system, Vuvuzela, for safety concerns, ensuring thorough investigations and solutions.
The event also featured thrilling aerial displays by renowned pilots Jason Beamish and Gareth Gill, demonstrating their skill and precision in the sky. Spectators were captivated as aircraft maneuvered through the air, showcasing the beauty and excitement of flight.
