NO MORE HIDING SPOTS FOR CRIME
Tackling Trash, Restoring Pride – thanks to Our Ward Matters!
Rustenburg – A community-driven transformation took place in Geelhoutpark on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 January 2025, as Our Ward Matters, a non-profit organisation dedicated to maintaining and beautifying Rustenburg’s streets, took action to clean up neglected public spaces.
Founded by André van Dyk, Our Ward Matters was officially registered on 1 February 2023, though its impact began in 2022. This past weekend, the team focused their efforts on Ward 16, starting at the low-water bridge on Pendoring Street, commonly known as the ‘Pendoring Spruitjie.’
A community comes together
Equipped with their own tools and a passion for change, the volunteers worked tirelessly to clear overgrown grass, remove weeds, and dispose of waste that had turned the area into an eyesore. Their dedication did not go unnoticed. Residents contributed to the initiative by donating 15 litres of petrol for the bush cutters, as well as cooldrinks and water to keep the team hydrated.
Local resident Riaan Koen stepped in to repair one of the bush cutters, while Ronel Peyper joined the team for Saturday’s clean-up efforts. Passersby were both surprised and excited to see the long-overdue transformation taking place before their eyes.
Addressing safety concerns
According to Van Dyk, numerous complaints had been raised by Geelhoutpark residents about the tall grass and thick bushes at the spruitjie, which had become a hiding place for criminals engaging in smash-and-grab incidents. The clean-up not only improved the area’s appearance but also enhanced safety for those passing through.
During the operation, the team made a shocking discovery — several dead animals had been dumped in the water, causing contamination and a foul odour. Removing these hazards was a critical step in restoring the health of the environment.
The community speaks
Volunteers and residents alike expressed their appreciation for the initiative.
“When we first got here, the grass was so tall, the weeds were out of control, and it was just very, very dirty,” said Jonas Mokini, a worker for Our Ward Matters. “Having the chance to clean up for the community is a very rewarding experience.”
Suenelle Peyper, a local house sitter, shared her excitement: “I pass by the spruitjie nearly every day, and I cannot wait to see the final results!”
Jogger André Burger, who frequently runs through the area, was equally thrilled. “Wow! I cannot believe someone is actually cleaning this dump! I can’t wait to jog past here every morning now. It will be so much better!”
A job well done
After completing the Pendoring Street clean-up around midday on Saturday, the team moved on to Abelia and Manuka Streets near Geelhoutpark Spar, wrapping up their efforts by 15:00. The Rustenburg Local Municipality contributed to the cause by donating a skip for waste collection.
One of the directors of Our Ward Matters, Gordon Khumalo, emphasised the significance of the initiative. “What Our Ward Matters is currently doing is supposed to be the work of the municipality. We are truly privileged to have such dedicated citizens. The community is undoubtedly grateful for their efforts.”
Van Dyk expressed his gratitude to the residents of Geelhoutpark, saying, “Thank you for welcoming Our Ward Matters with open arms. Together, we’ve transformed neglected spaces into cleaner, safer areas for everyone to enjoy. Let’s continue working as a community to keep Geelhoutpark beautiful and thriving.”
