Rustenburg – In a wave of destruction, Rustenburg has been hit by a series of fires over the past three weeks.

Suspected arson is at the centre of these devastating events, which include the deliberate torching of 23 Bojanala buses and the tragic loss of 60% of Kgaswane Nature Reserve.

In the early hours of 1 October 2024, residents awoke to the gut-wrenching news that 23 buses at two Bojanala Bus Depots had been reduced to ashes. Valued at a staggering R69 million, the buses were destroyed in what appears to be a coordinated arson attack, possibly linked to the dismissal of bus drivers in recent months. For the community, who depend on these buses, the loss is devastating.

Just days before, on 25 September 2024, flames tore through Kgaswane Nature Reserve, apparently sparked by ritual candles. The fire, which burned for six days, left a trail of 3,000 hectares of charred land and claimed the lives of precious wildlife, including a zebra that had to be humanely euthanized after being trapped by the flames. The destruction of this beloved reserve has left the community heartbroken.

Beyond these major incidents, the Buffelspoort area was also devastated by a wildfire from 14 to 16 September, destroying eight homes and causing R22 million in damages. As the fires continued to spread, many residents can’t help but wonder — could these fires be the work of arsonists?

Authorities are pleading with the community to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity immediately. With the burn ban still in place until 31 October 2024, it’s crucial for residents to act quickly if they spot signs of fire or suspicious behaviour. Every small act of vigilance could prevent another heartbreaking loss.

The Greater Rustenburg Fire Protection Association has called on the public to unite in this fight against the fires, saying, “The community is our greatest asset in preventing more destruction. Together, we can protect our homes, our wildlife, and each other.”
