Proving that no dream is too big when you believe in yourself, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was crowned Miss Universe after a 39-year wait for that title to return home to South Africa. A proud South African woman, she dedicated her win to South Africa and brought a nation to tears with her when outgoing Miss Universe, Iris Mittenaere passed on the Mikimoto crown to Demi-Leigh.

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is a small-town girl from the Western Cape with big dreams and even bigger ambitions.

This 22-year-old B.Com Business Management and Entrepreneurship graduate was crowned Miss South Africa at Sun City in March and clinched the title of Miss Universe 2017 at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas on 26 November. Nel-Peters competed against 91 other contestants in the week-long competition.

After winning, Nel-Peters dedicated her victory to South Africa: “South Africa, thank you for your support and love throughout my #MissUniverse journey. I may be the new Miss Universe but I will always be your Miss South Africa.”
