R150 Million Boost for Housing in North West
North West – In a powerful move to prioritise dignity and decent living conditions, the North West Provincial Legislature’s portfolio committee on premier and finance has adopted the Second Adjustment Appropriation Bill for 2024/2025 – unlocking an additional R150 million for the Department of Human Settlements.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, 11 March 2025, by the committee chairperson, hon. Nathan Oliphant, who emphasised the importance of ensuring that these funds translate into real change on the ground – particularly in the upgrading of informal settlements.
“As the department has been negatively affected by significant budget cuts which stalled various projects, we welcome the adjustment,” said hon. Oliphant. “Our people don’t want stories – they want decent housing, and this budget boost is a step in the right direction.”
The additional funds will be channelled into housing development projects, with a focus on ensuring contractor payments and accelerating delivery through the Informal Settlements Upgrading Grant. Hon. Oliphant also stressed the importance of strict oversight and accountability to ensure every cent is used effectively.
“We’re pleased that Provincial Treasury confirmed the department’s readiness and capacity to spend the funds. It’s time to put boots on the ground and restore hope to our communities,” he said. The committee report was tabled and adopted during the Legislature House Sitting, paving the way for renewed energy in tackling housing backlogs across the province.
