Runaway lion captured near Zeerust
North West – The Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) has confirmed that a lion which escaped from a transport trailer earlier this week has been safely captured.
The incident occurred on Monday, 20 October 2025, along the R49 between Lichtenburg and Zeerust. The lion was en route from the Free State to Nietverdiend in the Ramotshere Moiloa area when it reportedly broke free from its trailer, sparking widespread concern on social media. Authorities quickly responded to the scene, and the lion was recaptured without incident — bringing great relief to nearby communities and road users.
While no injuries or damages have been reported, DEDECT has launched a formal investigation into the matter. Early findings suggest there may have been an infringement of the transport permit’s conditions. The probe will also examine whether the owner complied with South African National Standards (SANS) 1884-3, which detail legal requirements for the safe transport and handling of wild animals, including cage design, vehicle specifications, and animal welfare protocols.
In addition, investigators will check compliance with permit Condition 5, which requires public liability insurance to cover any potential damages caused by escaped animals. Game farmers and wildlife transporters are urged to ensure full compliance with all safety and permit regulations to prevent similar incidents in future.
