NW – Motorists and residents across North West are urged to exercise extreme caution as heavy rains continue to flood roads, making travel hazardous and, in some areas, impossible. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, working to ensure public safety and redirect traffic where necessary.

The North West Community Safety and Transport Management chief director for transport regulations, Molefi Morule, confirmed that law enforcement is actively patrolling all national, provincial, and local roads to assist motorists.

“Since the beginning of these torrential rains, we have experienced interruptions in the flow of traffic on most, if not all, national and provincial roads. However, we are constantly monitoring the situation and diverting motorists to alternative routes where necessary,” said Morule.

The following roads have been heavily impacted by flooding:

  • N18 outside Mahikeng towards Setlagole
  • N12 near Stilfontein
  • R30 between Klerksdorp and Ventersdorp
  • R503 at Hartbeesfontein
  • N4 near Dinokana
  • N14 between Sannieshof and Delareyville, extending towards Vryburg
  • R52 between Koster and Lichtenburg
  • R509 between Koster and Magaliesberg
  • R30 between Derby and Ventersdorp
  • R52 between Koster and Rustenburg

Farm roads and informal settlements hit hard
In rural and informal areas, the impact of the rains has been particularly severe. Stella Potgieter, FF Plus councillor of Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality, expressed concerns about the situation in the Koster region.

“In our area, it was mainly farm roads and informal settlements that were flooded and washed away. In Sethumule, Koster area, children couldn’t get to school. The municipality will need to take this matter seriously,” she said.

Safety first: what you can do
Motorists are advised to avoid flooded roads and seek alternative routes where possible. Residents in affected areas should remain alert and report any road damage or blockages to 0800 018 000 (the North West Disaster Management Centre).
