Rustenburg – Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital (JSTH) recently reached a significant milestone in its medical history, successfully performing two complex neonatal surgeries for congenital malformations of the oesophagus (oesophageal atresia). This achievement marks a pivotal moment for the hospital and underscores the quality of care available in the public sector.

Oesophageal atresia is a rare congenital disorder where a baby’s oesophagus does not develop correctly during pregnancy, resulting in two separate oesophageal tubes that are not connected. These challenging surgeries were completed at the JSTH theatre in April 2024, showcasing the hospital’s growing expertise and commitment to advanced medical care.

The expert team behind these groundbreaking operations included paediatricians, a paediatric cardiologist, a radiologist, an anaesthesiologist, and intensive care nurses. Their collaborative effort and dedication to their craft have set a new standard for paediatric surgical care in the region.
Dr Takalani Morulana, a paediatric surgeon involved in the surgeries, stated, “The babies who underwent these procedures have been discharged and will be monitored closely in our clinic to ensure their continued health and to address any potential complications from the surgery.”

Gloria Tlhapi, the chief executive officer of JSTH, expressed her appreciation to the medical team for their exceptional skill and commitment to improving the lives of their young patients. This milestone serves as a testament to the hospital’s ongoing efforts to provide world-class healthcare to the community.
