The Department of Environmental Affairs’ working on fire teams have been hard at work readying its firefighters in preparation for the 2018 winter fire season.

In a statement released by the department on Tuesday, 3 April, they report having stationed over 4,000 firefighters at 160 bases throughout South Africa.

They further urge communities to take extra care in also readying for the coming fire season, by removing unnecessary rubble on their properties which can pose a serious fire risk. Cut down overhanging tree branches close to your property and clean your gutters. Houses next to grasslands need to ensure that there are sufficient fire breaks between their properties and the grasslands.

For safety precautions, members of the community should ensure that they have the contact details of their local fire authorities at hand should there be a fire emergency.
