Rustenburg – Lecturers and administration staff of Unisa’s Rustenburg campus took to the streets on Wednesday, 17 January, demanding that their voices be heard by campus management.

In an interview with the Platinum Weekly newspaper, NEHAWU shop steward, comrade Mokgadi Manaka said: “No services will be rendered, from registration of new students and those who will re-register for courses this year. No classes will be attended until management have met our request!

We want the individuals in the management council of Unisa who are linked to the Gupta family removed. Persons in management positions within Unisa also own private companies and submit illegal tenders to Unisa, we want these people out,” Manaka added. “We want contracted employees to be made permanent and we are demanding a 12.5% increase on salaries.”

Thabo Mokotedi, third year law student says: “We are depending on Unisa’s Pretoria main campus to come up with a solution, we want and need to study.” Says Kagiso Moatshe, hopeful first year student: “I came all the way from Zeerust to register; the campus is closed, and I can’t register. I hope employees and management reach an agreement soon.”
