Rustenburg – Tirelong Secondary School, in partnership with Glencore, recently launched the second year of the school’s highly successful maths and science upgrade programme.

The programme, now in its second year, has impacted many learners’ lives and vastly improved their academic prospects. It was introduced in 2017 among the school’s Grade 12 group. By the end of the year, the school had achieved a matric pass rate of 92.3% – a vast improvement from the 73% pass rate of the previous year.  The pilot group attained pass rates of 87% in maths and 100% in science, an impressive upgrade from the 50% in mathematics and 37% in science achieved in 2016. The 2018 instalment of the maths and science upgrade programme includes the school’s Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners.

“In the past years, our school has achieved below-average matric results, largely due to the poor performance of our maths and science learners,” says Tirelong Secondary School principal,

Gaopalelwe Petrus Mosweunyane.

“We realised that to improve our matric pass rate, we had to come up with an intervention for those learners. We therefore reached out to Glencore, who have been our partners on previous successful education initiatives.”

Glencore partnered with tutoring company L&T Private Tutoring and the Department of Education on the programme.
