Zeerust – The incidents of attacks on school teachers by learners seem to be escalating with the assault of five teachers at Rearabilwe Secondary School in Ntsoeletsoku Village near Zeerust on 7 March.

In a press statement issued by the North West Education and Sport Development, MEC Sello Lehari condemned the incident in the strongest terms.

In what is becoming fashionable, two Grade 10 learners aged 21 and 18 years old, reportedly played loud music with their cell phones, disrupting lessons. The headmaster ordered the two learners to bring their parents to a meeting the following day.

One of the learners brought along a parent and was taken through a disciplinary process and was subsequently suspended for seven days… something that didn’t go down well with him and his co-accused. According to the statement, the next day the two went to the school’s assembly, in disregard of the suspension penalty.

The boys reportedly disrupted the assembly and attacked five teachers who were part of the disciplinary team.

The statement said it was only when Grade 12 learners intervened that the situation calmed down. The teachers, who suffered minor injuries, opened a case of assault.

“On behalf of the department, I condemn the assault of the five teachers by learners at Rearabilwe Secondary school,” said Lehari.
