
MAJOR BLOW TO ILLICIT TRADE
Platinum Weekly newspaper | Bojanala District – A week-long multi-agency operation targeting counterfeit and illicit goods across the Bojanala District has resulted in the seizure of products worth more than R219 million, delivering a significant blow to illegal trade networks operating in the region.
The coordinated operations were conducted between 25 and 30 May 2026 in Rustenburg, Brits, Marikana and Hartbeespoort Dam. The intelligence-driven initiative brought together a range of law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies in a concerted effort to protect consumers, legitimate businesses and the South African economy from the impact of illicit trade.
According to colonel Adéle Myburgh, the operations involved the National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit, Customs, SARS Tactical Analysis and Investigation Unit, Public Order Policing (POP) Rustenburg, the Anti-Gang Unit, Phokeng K9 Unit, TRT Brits, Hartbeespoort Dam K9 Unit, North West Provincial Commercial Crime Unit, Brand Protectors and the National Regulator for Consumer Specifications (NRCS).
During the operations, authorities confiscated a wide variety of suspected counterfeit and illicit products, including branded clothing, sports apparel, sneakers, toys, cosmetics, luxury fashion accessories, medication and various consumable goods.
In total, 178,825 items with an estimated value of approximately R219.4 million were seized. The NRCS also confiscated 12,009 non-compliant products valued at an estimated R102.1 million. These included canned and frozen meat and fish products, consumables, electronics and household appliances that failed to meet regulatory requirements.
In addition, law enforcement officials seized R118,400 in cash. Authorities also confiscated illicit alcohol valued at R127,000, as well as counterfeit alcohol worth approximately R18,500.
A criminal case has been opened under the Medicines and Related Substances Act following the discovery of unregistered medication. Investigations are continuing.
The acting provincial commissioner of the North West, major general (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, praised the dedication and cooperation displayed by all participating agencies.
