
“Be Her Voice” Campaign Fills Court
Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – The Rustenburg community once again showed its determination to seek justice for Santie Bothma when a large crowd gathered at the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, for the bail application of the two accused in her murder case.
The court appearance formed part of the ongoing “Be Her Voice” campaign, which has united residents in support of Bothma’s family and in opposition to violence against women and vulnerable members of society.
During proceedings, the two accused applied for bail. However, the court did not grant bail after it emerged that the accused were unable to provide acceptable physical addresses for verification purposes. The matter was postponed to Friday, 12 June 2026, when the accused are expected to return to court and provide the required address details should they wish to continue with their bail application. Both accused remain in custody.
The case continues to attract significant public interest following the death of
Santie Bothma’s (54) body was discovered on the Dinie Estate Road on 5 May 2026. Her vehicle was later recovered in Protea Park during a police operation.
The accused, 22-year-old Corné Engelbrecht and 34-year-old Roelien Hattingh (reportedly a creche teacher for many years), face charges including murder, robbery, hijacking and defeating the ends of justice.

Outside court, supporters stood in solidarity with Bothma’s friends and family, carrying forward the message that has become synonymous with the campaign: “Santie can no longer speak for herself. We can. We will.”
As the case proceeds, community members continue to call for justice while supporting those left behind by the tragedy.
