Betrayed by Blood: cousin gets 15 years for rape
Mogwase – A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years of direct imprisonment on Tuesday, 25 March 2025, for the rape of his own cousin. The Mogwase Magistrates’ Court handed down the sentence, marking a strong stance against gender-based violence.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 8 October 2023, when the victim, then aged 29, was socialising with her cousin and a friend. The three were enjoying drinks together when the friend requested to be taken home. The perpetrator offered a lift in his vehicle. Tragically, the victim — unaware of what was to follow — fell asleep in the back seat. Instead of ensuring her safe return, her cousin diverted to a secluded bushy area in Bojating, Mogwase, where he committed the unthinkable act.
Constable Balungile Makaya of the Mogwase Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) led the investigation, ensuring justice was pursued with diligence and care. Working closely with prosecutor Sicelo Moselakgomo, the team built a solid case that led to the successful conviction. Acting provincial police commissioner of North West, major general Patrick Asaneng, praised the teamwork that secured the outcome.
