CLOSE CALL: Hoërskool Rustenburg learner struck by car
Rustenburg – A Hoërskool Rustenburg learner had a frightening start to her school day on Monday, 27 January 2025, when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing Von Wielligh Street at approximately 07:00.
According to an eyewitness, a white Toyota Urban Cross was traveling from the direction of the high school towards SUPERSPAR Rustenburg Square when the accident occurred. The learner, who was crossing the road with a friend, was hit and fell to the ground, sustaining a head wound. The eyewitness, who wishes to remain anonymous, described the moment of impact: “I don’t think the student or the driver saw each other. The car hit her, and she fell hard onto the tar road. She started bleeding a lot from a head wound and was disoriented, but with the help of bystanders, she slowly became more aware.”
The eyewitness immediately called for medical assistance. The paramedics provided first aid before Bojanala Ambulance Services transported the learner to Life Peglarae Hospital.
Bojanala Ambulance Services manager Rufus Nong confirmed that the learner sustained moderate head injuries but was in a stable condition. The quick response of bystanders played a crucial role in managing the situation. “I tried to regulate the traffic so that it wouldn’t build up too much,” the eyewitness added.
Hoërskool Rustenburg issued a statement regarding the incident: “The accident occurred outside the school premises, across from Roman’s Pizza. We can confirm that the learner was examined by a doctor and discharged without serious injuries. We wish her a speedy recovery.”
Rean Fourie, representing the school’s governing body, made an urgent appeal to motorists: “We urge all drivers to adhere to speed limits and traffic rules, especially around school zones. This accident is a stark reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike. Thankfully, the pupil involved was not seriously injured. The safety of our learners is paramount, and we will consider additional measures to enhance their protection.”
Stay alert, drive cautiously, and keep our children safe!
