Cyclists ride for Rhino Conservation in the heart of Pilanesberg
Rustenburg – The Rustenburg Cycling Club (RCC) recently joined forces with conservationists in the heart-stirring Tour de Pilanesberg, pedalling through the iconic Pilanesberg crater to support rhino conservation. Organized by Dr. Perry Dell from the Pilanesberg Wildlife Trust, the event drew avid cyclists eager to contribute to anti-poaching efforts while experiencing the reserve’s breathtaking landscapes.
Participants were immersed in the rich wildlife of Pilanesberg, with sights of elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and antelope enhancing the thrill of the journey. The route was challenging, as temperatures rose above 35°C, but volunteers from Friends of Pilanesberg and Makanyane kept riders hydrated and spirited throughout the day. A helicopter, together with an anti-poaching team, provided safety and support along the rugged terrain.
Among RCC’s dedicated participants were Jon and Tracey Andrews, who completed the tour and look forward to future rides in support of a cause close to their hearts. “It’s a journey that reminds us of the beauty we’re fighting to protect,” they shared, already eager for next year’s ride.
With each pedal, the Tour de Pilanesberg underscored the vital connection between the community and conservation, illustrating that every small effort contributes to a greater impact.
