ELDERLY MAN TARGETED IN DAYLIGHT ROBBERY AT DONKERHOEK CEMETERY
Rustenburg – A Sunday morning visit to Donkerhoek Cemetery turned into a frightening ordeal for elderly Rustenburg resident, who was robbed at knifepoint on 27 October 2024.
Around 10:00, he arrived at the cemetery to tend to his parents’ grave, a weekly tradition of respect and remembrance. But as he approached the grave, he was confronted by an unfamiliar man who initially claimed he was looking for work.
“Out of nowhere, he approached me, asking if I had any work for him,” he recounted in an interview with Platinum Weekly. “When I made it clear I wasn’t interested, his attitude changed. He grew aggressive, pulled out a knife, and demanded my phone. After taking it, he fled.”
South African Police Services (SAPS) colonel Adel Myburgh confirmed the robbery and noted that the elderly man has filed a formal complaint. “The elderly man was threatened with a knife and robbed of his phone,” Myburgh stated. “We are currently investigating the case.”
Members of the Rustenburg Crime Community Forum (RCCF) arrived at the cemetery shortly after the robbery but were unable to locate the suspect, who had quickly disappeared from the scene. RCCF described the suspect as tall and slender, dressed in a black hat, white shirt, and black trousers.
