Rustenburg – The Bafokeng Regional Court in Tlhabane has sentenced 25-year-old Koketso Mogomotsi to 12 years imprisonment on Thursday 13 June 2024, for the murder of Nkululeko Njuza.

Lieutenant colonel Amanda Funani provided details of the case, stating that the incident occurred on Sunday 8 May 2022. Mogomotsi, his friend, and the victim were at a local tavern in Tlhabane when a fight broke out. During the altercation, Mogomotsi drew a knife and stabbed Njuza in the upper body. Njuza was transported to a clinic but was declared dead upon arrival. Police were called to the scene, and Mogomotsi, along with his accomplices, was arrested when they arrived at the clinic to check on Njuza. Investigations revealed Mogomotsi’s involvement in the crime, with blood-stained clothes serving as crucial evidence. His friend later turned state witness, further solidifying the case against Mogomotsi.

Mogomotsi received a 12-year sentence, with two years suspended for five years on the condition that he does not commit similar offences during the suspension period. Additionally, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm under Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000).

The provincial police commissioner, lieutenant general Sello Kwena, and the director of public prosecution, Dr Rachel Makhari, praised the collaborative efforts of the investigating officer, warrant officer Khomotjo Matlala, and the prosecutor, advocate Zola Mphayipheli, in ensuring justice was served.
