Rustenburg – Eight to ten heavily armed gunmen used explosives to rob an armoured vehicle during a Cash-In-Transit (CIT) heist on Friday 2 March.

The robbery took place at about 09h00 in Nkaneng village near Wonderkop Mine outside Rustenburg.
“The suspects trailed the CIT vehicle in three vehicles; a white BMW X6, a Ford ST, and a Mitsubishi Pajero,” said captain Elsabé Augoustides.

A shootout ensued, injuring one of the security personnel. The suspects then used explosive devices to access the cash in the CIT van. They fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in their three vehicles but the Pajero was later found abandoned near the Bleskop Hospital.
Cases of attempted murder and armed robbery are being investigated.
