Rustenburg – Three people were injured and two died in a vehicle accident along the R24 close to the Maanhaarrand turnoff on Saturday morning, 17 February at about 09h30.

“It seems as if the driver lost control of the vehicle after one of the tyres burst,” said Weyand Bothma, Trauma Rescue’s station manager. “However, investigations continue.”

The vehicle, a Toyota Carola, travelled towards Rustenburg when the accident occurred. Emergency personnel from Rustenburg and Krugersdorp rushed to the scene.

When Trauma Rescue personnel arrived, two passengers were declared dead on scene. The third and fourth were stabilised on the scene while the driver reported no serious injuries.

In an interview with the Platinum Weekly newspaper, Bothma said it was important to send their fastest vehicle to the accident scene and stressed that it is essential for other road users to make way for emergency vehicles.

“Remember, every second counts after an accident. The faster we can get to an accident scene, the sooner we can start helping. Each second counts when you’re fighting to keep someone alive,” said Bothma.

When you see an emergency vehicle, simply move out of the way. You might save a life.
