Rustenburg – One suspect was killed and five arrested after a business burglary ended in a shoot-out with police on Tuesday evening, 13 February.

Lieutenant colonel Pelonomi Makau, police spokesperson, told the Platinum Weekly newspaper: “The police arrested the gang of five at approximately 22h00. The arrest came after a tip-off that a local car parts sales outlet in the Rustenburg Central Business District (CBD) was being robbed.”

Reportedly, the suspect opened fire on the police as soon as they arrived on the scene. The police allegedly returned fire and one of the suspects, aged 25, was fatally wounded.

The other five suspects were arrested on the scene and are expected to appear on Friday, 16 February 2018 in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court. They will face charges of business burglary, attempted murder, possession of unlawful firearms and the possession of suspected stolen goods.
The police wished to reiterate that contrary to social media reports, the person who was fatally wounded during the incident, was not a taxi driver.

In another CBD related incident in Rustenburg, a foreign national was allegedly attacked inside his hair salon. “The incident occurred on Wednesday, 14 February at 11h00 when the assailants allegedly doused the man with petrol and stabbed him with a knife,” Makau said.

“The police were able to reach the man and get him to safety before the assailants could burn the man alive.” No one has been arrested in this matter and investigations continue.
