Rustenburg – “The North West High Court sitting in Mogwase sentenced two murderers to double life imprisonment sentences on charges of murder and rape,” said lieutenant colonel Pelonomi Makau, police spokesperson. 


Mr van Heerden of Rustenburg (aged 57) was shot and killed on 29 January 2017. The murder took place during a house robbery of the home he shared with his wife in Waterfall Village Rustenburg, as reported in the Platinum Weekly newspaper of 3 February 2017.


Joseph Mashava (29) and Shimbuya Munjarazi (28) were identified and arrested in Matebeleng informal settlement in March 2017. 


They further received a 5 years sentence each for housebreaking, 15 years for robbery with aggravated circumstances, 5 years for possession of an unlawful firearm and 3 years for unlawful possession of ammunition.


The North West provincial commissioner, lieutenant general, Baile Motswenyane welcomed the sentence and applauded the Rustenburg trio task team for their diligent work on this case.
