HAVE YOUR SAY — Should high school learners be allowed to use cellphones during school hours?

Although cellphones can be useful for research, communication and emergencies, they may also distract learners and disrupt lessons. Should high schools allow cellphone use during school hours, or should devices remain switched off and safely stored?

“Mostly no. Cellphones distract learners and can lead to disrespect in class, yet teachers get blamed for poor marks. Exceptions should apply for medical monitoring. TikTok, Facebook and Instagram can wait until after school.”

“No. Many learners already struggle to concentrate without the added distraction of cellphones. They may miss important parts of lessons or disrupt the class, making it harder for teachers to teach and other learners to focus.”
