Flame of Hope lights up Rustenburg

Dr Rakhudu, kgosana of Tsitsing village and representative of the Royal Bafokeng Tribal Authority, joined Rustenburg executive mayor Sheila Mabale-Huma in proudly holding the Flame of Hope.
Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – The Flame of Hope brought a powerful message of courage, unity and inclusion to Rustenburg on Friday, 28 August 2026, during the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics South Africa National Summer Games.
Ceremonially handed over by Dr Mathews Phosa, the torch passed through the hands of national, provincial and local leaders. Its journey reflected their shared commitment to empowering athletes with intellectual disabilities and celebrating their talents, determination and achievements. Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, North West Provincial commissioner lieutenant general Arthur Adams and Rustenburg executive mayor Sheila Mabale-Huma officially declared the Games open.
The Flame of Hope symbolises the courage, perseverance and extraordinary spirit of Special Olympics athletes. As host city, Rustenburg welcomed this inspiring celebration of diversity and sport – giving every athlete an opportunity to participate, shine and feel empowered.
The three-day Games concluded on Sunday, 30 August 2026, after bringing together more than 600 athletes from all nine provinces. Participants competed in athletics, basketball, bocce, football, netball, swimming and table tennis.
The event also helped identify athletes who could represent Team South Africa at the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Santiago, Chile.
