Scholar transport driver jailed for eight years for rape

Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – The Bafokeng Regional Court in Tlhabane sentenced 31-year-old scholar transport driver Odirile Modise to eight years’ direct imprisonment on Thursday, 27 August 2026, after finding him guilty of raping his girlfriend.
According to police spokesperson warrant officer Ofentse Mokgadi, the offence took place in Tlhabane on 11 November 2023. Modise asked his girlfriend to have sex with him, but she refused and told him she was tired. Despite her refusal, he proceeded without her consent.
The victim reported the incident to the police, leading to Modise’s arrest. He was released on bail and remained on bail until sentencing.
In addition to the prison term, Modise was declared unfit to possess a firearm and prohibited from working with children.
The court noted that he had pleaded not guilty and shown no remorse.
Acting district commissioner brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae welcomed the sentence and commended investigating officer detective warrant officer Christopher Maimela and prosecutor advocate Zola Mpayipheli for ensuring that justice was served.
“No means no. Every person has the right to decide whether or not to engage in sexual activity, regardless of their relationship with the other person,” brigadier Ntoagae said.
