Our Ward Matters tackles overgrowth, illegal dumping and road-safety concerns across Rustenburg
Platinum Weekly newspaper | Rustenburg – Our Ward Matters (OWM) continued its work across Rustenburg, addressing overgrown vegetation, litter, illegal dumping and public-safety concerns while encouraging residents to take pride in their surroundings.
Founded by Ward 15 councillor André van Dyk and led by Cllr Van Dyk and Cllr Tanya Rothman, the initiative remains active in Wards 15, 16 and 17.
Clearing the way along Helen Joseph
On Monday, 14 September, the team continued working along Helen Joseph Street, clearing overgrown grass from road islands and verges between Kock Street and Arend Road.
Illegal dumping and refuse bags near BP Safari remain a concern. OWM urged residents and businesses to help protect cleaned areas and dispose of waste responsibly.
Hard work delivers visible results
On Tuesday, 15 September, work continued on both sides of Helen Joseph Street, including the road island at Arend Road and the nearby open space.
The team cleared overgrowth around BP Safari and McDonald’s, removed stubborn weeds from roads and pavements, and cleaned the area thoroughly. OWM emphasised that consistent maintenance requires time, physical effort and community support.
Fresh paint for safer streets
On Wednesday, 16 September, OWM and Cllr Tanya Rothman restored streetlight poles, road signs and STOP signs in the Cuckoo, Rivers, Bokmakierie and Helen Joseph areas. Rust was removed, surfaces were cleaned and fresh paint was applied to improve appearance and visibility. OWM thanked The Paint Palette for supplying quality paint and supporting the project.
Professionalism in every detail
On Monday, 21 September, teams worked at the Raasblaar Triangle and around the Koorsboom Substation. Grass, soil and debris that had spread into the roads were removed by hand, while stormwater drains were cleared and opened. A large amount of sand and loose stone was also removed from a STOP street, reducing a potential danger to motorists.
