Armed robbers enlarging their territory
Rustenburg – “Rustenburg as a community needs to stand together and not allow these rotten apples to infiltrate our beautiful city,” The Square Centre’s press release reads.
This is after a 37-year-old man is currently in a serious condition after he was shot by armed robbers in the busy parking lot of Rustenburg Square on Tuesday 9 November.
After withdrawing money at the Waterfall Mall, the victim and a passenger noticed that they were being tailed. They drove around for a while until they thought they lost them. They stopped in the Rustenburg Square parking area to go and have breakfast at Milaneza.
Police spokesperson captain Elsabé Augoustides said: “Before they could even exit their vehicle, the robbers were standing next to them, one at each side pointing their guns and demanding cash.
The passenger reacted and got out of the vehicle whereafter a struggle ensued. When the driver got out of the vehicle, he was shot in his left thigh.”
The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in a white Kia Rio with fake number plates.
Security at the Rustenburg Square centre immediately raised the alarm. The police and ER24 were summoned who arrived shortly after. ER24 found the man laying on his stomach on the walkway in front of Milaneza where bystanders were attending to him.
SAPS’ forensic team collected evidence on site. The man, said to be a Hungarian national who own several internet cafes and gambling parlours in town, was taken to hospital after by ER24.
“The Square Centre management and security want to thank all of the bystanders who assisted the victim, as well as SAPS and ER24 who responded swiftly.
We would like to reassure our clients that The Square together with our security team will strive to keep The Square Centre safe to the best of our abilities,” the Rustenburg Square centre’s statement concluded.
