Rustenburg – The Chinese community celebrated the beginning of a new year on Friday, 12 February. Although the social gatherings may have been subdued for obvious reasons, the Lin family enjoyed a dinner of chicken, meat and fish which symbolises having an abundance year after year.

Franklin Chung explained to Platinum Weekly that every year collector gold coins, and stamps are designed and sold to commemorate the animal of the year in countries where there is a large Chinese population. In Hong Kong even the subway tickets depict the animal of the year. Platinum Weekly would like to wish our Chinese readers a very happy and bountiful new year.

The new year is symbolised by the ox which characterises hard work, positivity, and honesty.
