Rustenburg – A 32-year-old man and his girlfriend aged 38, appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 9 September on three counts of possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

The suspects’ court appearance follows their arrest on Monday 7 September in Proteapark, Rustenburg, after police acted on a tip-off. After the arrest, police seized three vehicles; an Audi A4, Volkswagen Golf 5 and Hyundai Atos, which were linked to car hijackings committed from 4 to 5 September in Proteapark and the Rustenburg Kloof area. Furthermore, a white Suzuki Swift which is alleged to have been used during the commission of the crimes, was also seized.

According to police spokesperson brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, preliminary investigations revealed that the male suspect has a pending hijacking case for a crime committed in December last year in Rustenburg. Meanwhile, a veterinarian was summoned to the scene to assist in sedating a vicious dog (belonging to one of the suspects) which attacked and bit one of the police officers on his leg.

North West provincial commissioner, lieutenant general Sello Kwena commended the police for their swift reaction which led to the arrest.

Three stolen cars found in the suspects’ possession.
