Cops arrested for cigarettes and booze?
Rustenburg – A police sergeant who appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Friday 22 May was charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice.
Cindy Nidene Roos was arrested in Rustenburg two days earlier in connection with the theft of cigarettes worth R6,000 that were recovered during the arrest. Roos will make her second court appearance on 31 August. Roos, who booked out the cigarettes from the Rustenburg police station's exhibit store on 8 May under the pretext of dispatching them to a forensic laboratory, was arrested after her intentions were detected.
In another unrelated incident, two police sergeants appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on 22 May over charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice. Thabang Selebale and Tshepo Pooe will make their second court appearance on 17 June. The two were arrested over theft of liquor worth R10,000.
It is alleged that they connived with two other suspects – Morgen Mofokeng and Timothy Nkola – to steal the liquor from three women being members of a stokvel. Mofokeng and Nkola, both civilians, reportedly convinced the women to sell them liquor belonging to a stokvel. It was during the transaction that Selebale and Pooe emerged with an unmarked police vehicle and threatened the women with arrest for contravening lockdown regulations.
They then confiscated the liquor, loaded it in a red mini cooper belonging to one of the two other suspects and drove off. It later emerged that the liquor was not documented as an exhibit at the police station.
Mofokeng and Nkola were arrested on Saturday 16 May. They will appear in court with the police officers.
