The percentage of miners striking is 5% of the overall workforce. As a result, the legal strike has impacted 95% of workers.
Since the illegal strike by NUMSA workers, the LANXESS Chrome Mine has shut down making it difficult for approximately 1,400 miners to resume work and continue to fulfil their livelihoods.
If each miner is a bread winner and is looking after a household of 5 people, this potentially has an impact on 7,000 mouths to be fed.
The mining sector contributes about 20% to the South African GDP. Strikes such as this damages investor confidence and in doing so, has negative impacts on the economy and job sustainability/creation for those working in this sector.
