Hartbeespoort – If you have visited Hartbeespoort Dam recently, you most likely would have spotted the out-of-control water hyacinth, becoming a real eyesore.

Those driving through Harties will be excused for thinking the dam to be a rugby field. Both the Madibeng Local Municipality and the national Department of Water and Sanitation have battled to eradicate the weed over the years.

Its unsightly presence has taken the gloss of what is one of the most beautiful towns in the North West province. According to several experts previously involved in this hyacinth plague, the likelihood of completely eradicating it at Harties is growing increasingly slim.
