Rustenburg hijacking claims a life

09 November 2017

Rustenburg – On Monday, 6 November at 11h00, the unsuspecting 49-year old Zaheed Latif, fondly known as Poppy, was hijacked.

On her way from her business in Klopper Street to deposit money, Latif and a co-worker, driving a white Chevrolet utility vehicle, stopped behind a taxi at the intersection of Van Belkum and Church streets. “Here a group of between four and six African males armed with handguns opened fire on the vehicle Latif was driving,” says captain Elsabé Augoustides, police spokesperson, said. The co-worker managed to jump out of the vehicle and fled. Latif was hijacked and the suspects drove away with her.

Police were immediately notified of the hijacking and kidnapping, and of the vehicle’s details. At the time of the hijacking a police helicopter, which was already deployed, joined the search for the victim and vehicle.

Within 25 minutes of the hijacking, the vehicle was spotted by the helicopter crew. The vehicle was spotted on a dirt road, between trees and bushes, approximately 5km from the hijacking scene. Police members were directed to the scene.

Upon arrival they made the shocking discovery of the mortally wounded Latif. The suspects had fled the scene on foot taking all the money with them.  No arrests have been made. The case is an on-going investigation.

Our deepest, heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mrs Zaheed Latif.
