Bail posted for parents charge with rape and neglect
Rustenburg – Bail was granted by the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 6 October, to parents charged with rape and neglect. “The couple was released on R1000.00 bail,” said captain Elsabé Augoustides, police spokesperson.
The court warned the parents that they could no longer stay in Rustenburg and that they should report to the Roodepoort Police every Monday. “They will be residing with family in Roodepoort for the duration of the case,” Augoustides said.
The case is postponed to Thursday, 2 November.
The case started when a 41-year old mother and 45-year old father, residents of Rustenburg, appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on 14 September to face charges of rape, neglect, failure to report child abuse and failure to report knowledge of a sexual offence committed against their three- year old child.
During the course of December 2016 a member of the Care to be Kind organisation reported an incident to the Police. A three-year old child was in the presence of her allegedly highly intoxicated mother at Bobby’s Rugby Club in East End, Rustenburg. The child, only wearing a nappy, was frequently seen with the mother. The child’s mother allegedly approached the organisation member requesting money to care for the child. The mother then handed the child over to the unnamed member.
The child was taken to a place of safety and was then taken to a hospital, where it was discovered that the little one had allegedly been severely sexually assaulted. Evidence was given by a medical doctor confirming the seriousness of the child’s injuries. The child will have to undergo corrective surgery as a result of the injuries she sustained.
“The case is being investigated by Family Violence, Child Abuse and Sexual Offences (FCS). The child remains in a place of safety,” Augoustides said.
