Rustenburg – Imagine my excitement upon discovering I have won a Yamaha Baby Grand Piano! These exquisite instruments can command prices in the hundreds of thousands of rands, varying by model. As someone who frequently enters competitions, this seemed like a dream come true. However, a nagging feeling prompted me to scrutinise the details.

Upon closer inspection of the congratulatory email, I realised something was amiss — I don’t recall entering any competition offering a piano as a prize. My suspicion deepened when I learned my husband received an identical message. This revelation was the red flag I needed to recognise the situation for what it was: a phishing scam.

Thankfully, I had not yet provided my personal details in response to the email. It’s a reminder of the lengths to which scammers will go, exploiting our hopes and dreams.

I urge everyone in our community to remain vigilant. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Let’s protect ourselves and each other by sharing our experiences and staying informed about the tactics used by these digital predators.
