Rustenburg – In a display of strategic teamwork, the chess team from Bergsig Academy recently participated in the renowned Alexforbes Battle Boards Online Chess Championships. This significant event saw schools from across four provinces vying for the top position in what turned out to be a keenly contested tournament, marking a historic participation in the tournament.

The championships, which concluded on Saturday 24 February 2024, featured five secondary schools from Rustenburg. Alongside Bergsig Academy, Grenville High School, Hoërskool Rustenburg, Hoërskool Grenswag, and Lebone II College represented the North West Province with distinction.
Bergsig Academy’s journey in the tournament was notable, advancing to the Top 16 round. There, they faced Westerford High School, a formidable opponent that eventually secured third place overall. Despite a valiant effort, Bergsig Academy was edged out with a score of 3.5 to 6.5. 

Meanwhile, Hoërskool Rustenburg clashed with Hugenote High School in a closely fought match, narrowly losing with a score of 4.5 to 5.5. Grenville High School achieved a victory against Northcliff with a score of 6-5 but was later defeated in the quarterfinals by Westerford High School with a decisive 10-0 scoreline.

The championship was ultimately clinched by St John’s College, with Paul Roos PRG finishing as the runner-up and Westerford High School taking a commendable third place. The tournament showcased the immense talent and dedication of the participants, providing them with an invaluable platform to hone their skills and compete against some of the best young chess minds in the country.
