Rustenburg/ Tlhabane – A protest action, which started on Wednesday, 2 August and as reported in the Platinum Weekly newspaper on two occasions, turned violent when a man was fatally shot by a security guard. The man, 25, passed away in the hospital shortly after the protest.

“The Police were summoned to the scene and 22 people were arrested for public violence,” sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi, police spokesperson said.

Each of the protestors was granted R5,000.00 bail on Wednesday, 16 August.

The disgruntled Tlhabane protestors are up in arms over the construction of the new Tlhabane mall, still in an early stage.

To voice their concerns, the members barricaded roads last week, for what they deemed as a lack of transparency.

The area is closely monitored by SAPS.
