Potchefstroom – A total of 290 people were arrested throughout the North West province for various offences during an operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Wednesday 31 July  and Thursday 1 August. 

Police spokesperson colonel Adéle Myburgh said: “44 of the suspects were arrested for crimes against women and children. Some of the suspects were arrested for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, robbery, malicious damage to property, theft, rape, contravening of protection orders and many other offences.” 

The suspects have appeared before various magistrate courts around the province to be tried for their offences.
