Rustenburg – The Police arrested 34 suspects between 1 and 30 June regarding the damage and theft of mine infrastructure. 

“The damages pose a risk to public safety, electricity supply, communication and transportation,” said police spokesperson captain Aafje Botma. 


Of the 34 suspects, 14 were arrested in Rustenburg Cluster for tampering with and/or destroying mine property. 


According to Botma, in one incident that occurred on 1 June at 16:16, a security officer at a mine in Boitekong discovered two suspects in possession of mine property. The suspects were arrested and handed over to the Police.


In another incident, three suspects aged between 24 and 34 were seen carrying bundles of copper cable, in Phokeng on Friday 28 June. The trio was arrested.
