Rustenburg – At least nine business robberies in eleven days had been reported in various parts of Rustenburg during June, a shocking statistic that points towards a sharp and alarming increase in the levels of crime. 


Below is a timeline and details of several business robberies:

 

  • Thursday 20 June - A diesel truck was stolen at Learn Fast School, which is located at Bergsig Academy.
  • Thursday 20 June - A burglary was reported on a construction site along the R24 road.
  • Monday 25 June - A break-in occurred at Pep stores, which is located next to the Department of Home Affairs offices. The suspects are believed to have gained access into the store through the roof. 
  • Wednesday 27 June - An armed robbery occurred at KFC in Safari Tuine. According to reports, two employees were injured after shots were fired. 
  • Thursday 28 June - There was an armed robbery at Zorba Liquor stores in the East End area. A cell phone belonging to a security guard was stolen.   
  • Friday 29 June - A business robbery was reported at Stoltz Group in Beyers Naude. Batteries were stolen after the suspects gained access through the roof.
  • Saturday 30 June - An armed robbery at Princess Café, which is located at the corner of Beyers Naude Drive and Zendeling Street.
  • Tuesday 2 July – Four suspects were about to break into Pep stores in Midtown Mall when they were arrested by the Rustenburg police. 
  • Wednesday 3 July – There was a business robbery at Inkpot, opposite the Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM) offices, in Beyers Naude Street at around 05:00. According to reports, cartridges were among the stolen items. 

Four of the robberies have been confirmed by the police. Police spokesperson captain Elsabé Augoustides told Platinum Weekly: “I can confirm that there were robberies at KFC, Zorba Liqour Stores and Princess Café. The police are investigating, and no arrests have been made yet.”
