Rustenburg – The main priority for LANXESS was on resolving the illegal strike activities and bringing all employees back to surface, well and safe, which is why the Company is pleased to report that talks with National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) have resumed.

The welfare of the employees is a concern for the Company, and medical assistance was immediately available as soon as the employees returned to surface. The LANXESS mine has ensured that the strikers were supplied with food and medicine since the beginning of the illegal strike activities.

The Company called on NUMSA strike leaders to ensure distribution – especially to workers in need.

The illegal strike activities started on the morning of 19 June, when 290 NUMSA members embarked on an underground sit-in strike during their dayshift and refused several demands from the LANXESS mine to comply with the court interdict and come back on surface. It lasted for nine days.
