North West – The police are advising community members, especially those living in the Makwassie, Leeudoringstad, Boskuil and Wolmaransstad areas, not to fall for the latest tricks of criminals who are now luring unsuspecting victims by using online advertisements.

This follows an incident in which two brothers were robbed of their cash and personal belongings after they were attacked and overpowered by a group of men at Boskuil near Makwassie. The robbery took place on Saturday 18 May in the middle of what the two brothers thought was a process of buying cattle.

The police have since established that the suspects, who are yet to be arrested, are luring their victims to view either the livestock or vehicles which are ‘on sale’.

“In some instances, the potential buyer would even be offered to test-drive a vehicle which was advertised.

The suspects will then rob the person of his personal belongings like cellular phones, wallets and cash,” police spokesperson colonel Adéle Myburgh said.

She also added that the public must avoid meeting unknown people in residential areas and must rather opt for grocery stores, fast food restaurants, parking lots or the nearest police station.
