Rustenburg – The police in Rustenburg have issued a stern warning to the public to avoid hitchhiking.

A man, who raped and robbed many of his hitchhiking passengers, was sentenced to 38 years in jail by the Bafokeng Regional Court in Tlhabane on Thursday 23 May 2019.

Boiphelo Jele was handed this hefty sentence for three counts of rape, four counts of armed robbery and one of housebreaking.

Before his arrest, Boiphelo had become a notorious serial rapist by offering lifts to hitchhikers travelling from Rustenburg to Mafikeng before raping and robbing the unsuspecting passengers.

However, on Monday 18 June 2018, a 27-year old woman he had given a lift to, threw herself out of the moving car and screamed for help near Moedwil after realising she was in danger of being raped.

“The suspect, who had threatened the woman with a toy gun, was arrested as he tried to flee,” police spokesperson sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi said.

Investigations by captain Mokgatlhe Mokgatlhe of the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in Rustenburg linked Boiphelo to other cases of rape and robbery, leading to his conviction.

“We caution people against hitchhiking because it puts their lives in danger,” sergeant Ofentse added.
