OWLS & OWL BOXES BirdLife Rustenburg
Rustenburg – Owls are both fascinating and beautiful, and their presence in any garden offers hours of intrigue. They also provide an efficient means of pest control.
The two most common species in our area are the Barn Owl and the Spotted Eagle Owl.
On Monday 15 April, BirdLife Rustenburg will hold their monthly meeting at the Methodist Church on the corner of Brink and Schuurman Streets.
Jonathan Haw from Eco Solutions will give a presentation on owls and owl boxes. Eco Solutions designs owl and bat boxes, constructed from recycled plywood which are then weather-proofed with an industrial wood sealant and has a lifespan of five years. Boxes will be on sale at the meeting at approximately R700 each.
The meeting starts at 19:00 and members and non-members are welcome. Non-members pay R20 per person. Tea, coffee and snacks will be served after the meeting.
The Saturday outing for this month will only take place on 27 April and it will be to the farm of Koos Olivier in Swartruggens. Koos is a retired veterinary surgeon and an expert on the history of Swartruggens and Groot Marico area.
He is also an expert on trees and astrology. Birds to be expected are the usual Bushveld species such as Barred Wren-Warbler, Bearded Woodpecker, Black-chested Snake Eagle, Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk, Burnt-necked Eremomela, Pied Barbet, Pied Babbler, White-backed Vulture and many more.
BirdLife Rustenburg will be having a ‘bring and braai’ on the farm. Please bring your own meat, snacks, drinks and chairs. All members and non-members are welcome, and non-members must pay R20. They will meet at BP Garage at the Waterfall Mall at 06:00 and should be home by 15:00.
